Body Language Tips

Your body speaks before you open your mouth. Research suggests that nonverbal communication accounts for a significant portion of how your message is received. Understanding body language — both your own and others' — gives you a powerful edge in every interaction.

The key is not to manipulate or fake signals, but to align your body language with your intentions so your message comes through clearly.

Here are body language tips you can use immediately:

1. Maintain natural eye contact. Look at the person you are speaking with for about 60 to 70 percent of the conversation. Too little eye contact suggests disinterest; too much can feel intense. Find a comfortable balance that shows engagement.

2. Open your posture. Uncross your arms and legs. Face the person you are talking to squarely. An open posture signals receptiveness and confidence, while closed postures create an unconscious barrier.

3. Mirror the other person subtly. When you naturally adopt a similar posture or gesture as your conversation partner, it builds rapport. This should not be exaggerated — subtle, natural mirroring is most effective.

4. Use purposeful gestures. Hand gestures can emphasize your points and make your communication more dynamic. Avoid fidgeting or repetitive movements, which signal nervousness and distract from your message.

5. Mind your facial expressions. A genuine smile activates different muscles than a forced one, and people can tell the difference subconsciously. Practice being aware of what your face is expressing, especially during difficult conversations.

Your body language is always communicating something. By becoming more intentional about your nonverbal signals, you make it easier for others to trust, understand, and connect with you.
